Facts of embezzlement of the state property have been detected following a thorough checking for the year 2004 conducted by the Financial Police.

    The Ajara department of the Financial Police has initiated a criminal case on facts of misappropriation of funds that should have gone to the budget in 1999-2004 from a one-time fee for crossing the Turkish border from Georgian side.

    According to the Financial Police, the budget in 19999-2004 fell short of at least $6.87 million due to the abovementioned facts.

  4. BATUMI PORT PROPERTY WAS MANAGED CORRUPTLY AND INEFFICIENTLY, SAYS THE CHAMBER OF CONTROL

    The Chamber of Control exposed a number of violations (especially juridical ones) in the management of Batumi port’s property while checking it.

    For instance, by the decision of the Batumi Mayor’s Office a municipal enterprise was set up at the port, while it was to be under the supervision of the central government.

  5. REFORMS IN THE CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT

    Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli has singed an order on reforms in the Customs Department, reports the press service of the department, part of the body of the Finance Ministry.

    As a result of the reorganization only four regional customs will be left – East, West, South and North.

  6. NEW MANAGEMENT OF CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT TO DECIDE ON CUSTOMS STRUCTURE BY SUMMER

    Giorgi Godabrelidze, the chairman of the Customs Department, has said a project of a Customs new structure will be drawn up in a week and will acquire a final shape after a month and a half.

    Godabrelidze says the regional principle has been maintained so far.

  7. AFTER FIVE DAYS CLOSE TO CIVIL WAR

    A five-day political crisis between the center and the region has been overcome after a three-hour dialogue of the Georgian President and the leader of the Ajar Autonomous Republic, says Mtavari Gazeti, but adds that an agreement reached between the sides does not mean that the problem has been solved for good.

    According to the paper, in exchange of lifting economic sanctions by the central government from Ajara, the latter has promised to provide conditions for holding democratic elections in the Autonomous Republic and release people detained on political grounds.

    Results of a dialogue between Batumi and Tbilisi started with the visit of the acting president of Georgia Nino Burjanadze to Ajara have yet to be seen.

    According to Dilis Gazeti, neither this visit nor the ones to come (State Minister Zurab Zhvania plans to arrive in Batumi as well) will yield any results until uncompromising conflict of interests exits between the sides.

    A completion for disbursing state subsidies to tea producers finished today. 62 companies, registered in west Georgia, were tea is grown (the Samegrelo, Imereti, Guria regions and the Ajara Autonomous Republic), and in Tbilisi took part in it.

    At today’s presentation of the election code MPs Valeri Gelbakhiani and Giorgi Targamadze announced their plans to introduce the document to Parliament as a legislative initiative.

    The majority-deputy Tengiz Jgushia’s announcement on the big volume of goods trafficking on the Abkhazeti-Samegrelo border and the participation in it of the head of the guerilla group “Forest Brothers” Dato Shengelia has become the subject of hot debates both in the capital and the regions, Rezonansi writes, noting that this scandalous topic, as though having original character, more than once appeared on the pages of Georgian press in the past.

    Droni, noting the quite grave situation in the Zugdidi region (Samegrelo region), quotes the majority-deputy Tengiz Jgushia as saying that “smuggler clans, the majority of which are called guerillas, control Zugdidi”.

  15. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN GEORGIA ACKNOWLEDGED TO BE CONDUCTED
    (Daily News: April 10, 2000)

    According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), by 9 p.m. the votes were shared the following way: 80.5% voted for Eduard Shevardnadze, 16.6% – for Jumber Patiashvili, 0.26% – Kartlos Garibashvili, 0.2% – Avtandil Joglidze, 0.1% – Tengiz Asanidze, 0.08% – Vazha Zhgenti (after 97% of voters cast their vote). The information is being further specified, the CEC is to present the final results for the elections in 20 days.

    It should be noted that this was the President Eduard Shevardnadze’s first visit through the regions after the official announcement of the pre election campaign. Eduard Shevardnadze visited the Sarpi customs checkpoint in the first place.

  18. GEORGIA EXPECTING FROM RUSSIA MORE ACTIVITY FOR TACKLING THE ABKHAZ PROBLEM

    “Russia can play a decisive role in the settlement of the Abkhaz conflict, but in our opinion, the efforts, taken by the Russian side for tackling this problem, is out of proportion to its real capacity”, the Foreign Minister Irakli Menagarishvili said on February 14. He noted that quickest settlement of the Abkhaz problem, in the first place is equitable to the interest of Russia and the development of its relations with the South Caucasian countries.

  19. NOTORIOUS ABKHAZ CRIMINAL KILLED IN THE SECURITY ZONE

    On January 25, at night, in the vicinity of the Russian peacekeepers’ check-point in the village Rukhi (Zugdidi district) three people, among them notorious Abkhaz criminal with the nickname “Kid”, were killing during the shooting. As it became known to Sarke from the reliable sources, this was the result of the “relationships’ defining” between the Georgian and Abkhaz criminal groups, engaged in the so called “hazel-nut business” in the lower area of the Gali region (the village Ganakhleba, Tagiloni, Nabakevi, Otobaia).

  20. AJARIAN AUTHORITIES CLAIM THAT THERE WAS NO ATTEMPT OF SELLING ARMS AT THE RUSSIAN MILITARY BASE IN BATUMI

    The first Deputy State Security Minster of the Autonomous Republic Gogi Kupreishvili declared that completely eliminated the possibility of arms transportation out of Ajara. In his words, any military transportation means are thoroughly checked at the administrative border of the Autonomous Republic as well as the military cargo transported by the sea.
