    International forum on local economic development has been held in Tbilisi this week. Sarke interviewed Zviad Archuadze, head of Tbilisi City Hall’s economic policy service, regarding importance and results if this event.

  4. ASSESSMENT OF GAS MAIN KUTAISI-SENAKI SECTION RECONSTRUCTION’S ENVIRONMENT IMPACT TO BE CONSIDERED NEXT WEEK

    According to Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation, environment impact assessment of reconstruction project on gas main’s Kutaisi-Senaki 85-km section will be held on May 10-11. Rehabilitation project is funded by USAID.

  5. GAMBLING ARRANGING RELEASED FROM DUES ON GUDAURI RECREATIONAL TERRITORY

    According to amendments to law “On License and Permission Dues”, being approved by the Parliament yesterday, arranging of gambling in recreational territory of Gudauri (alpine resort north from Tbilisi) was exempted from dues. The amendments were initiated by Tbilisi City Hall, which manages currently Gudauri.

    Labor Party insists that the government continues planning to sell LLC Georgian Railway to Russia.

    The party declares that negotiations on the subject were held with a special employ of Russia before Eastern in Tbilisi.

    The Parliament has approved amendments to Tax Code in the first reading today, envisaging VAT removal for sweeping/cleaning and wastes’ management service on settled territories. The service is released from VAT without right to set-off.

    As the newspaper notes, several dozens of investors has applied to the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development for postponement of obligations’ fulfillment. The Ministry does not name these investors in order to maintain confidentiality.

    Wissol Petroleum Georgia has opened another car service center Auto Express on Politkovskaya Street (former Jikia Street) in Tbilisi today. The company plans to open more 10 such centers until the end of year, spending up to 1 million lari for that end.

  11. LOCAL FIXED TELEPHONE NETWORK NUMBERS TO BE CHANGED FROM JUNE

    Economy and Sustainable Development Ministry reported that from June 4, subscriber numbers of local fixed telephone networks will be simultaneously changed in all cities and regional centers. The change means adding of digit “2” in the beginning of all existing subscriber numbers, which is caused by ongoing transfer to new national numeration system.

  12. “QATAR AIRWAYS” TO START FLIGHTS TO GEORGIA IN NOVEMBER

    Economy and Sustainable Development Ministry reported that Qatar Airways will start on November 30 regular flights to Central Asia, which after landing in Baku, will have final destination in Tbilisi.

    Qatar Airways has announced expansion of its international flight area today.

  13. REPRESENTATIVES OF MORE THAN 20 COUNTRIES TAKE PART IN FORUM ON LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

    The 5th international forum on local economic development was started in Tbilisi today, being attended by representatives of self-governments from more than 20 countries.

    The forum, which is organized by Tbilisi City Hall and German International Cooperation Society (GIZ), will last until May 5.

  14. “SILKNET” OFFERS COMBINED USE OF TELEPHONE, INTERNET AND TV

    JSC SilkNet (fixed communication company) announced about offering of universal pack, including 3 services – telephone, internet and IP TV broadcast (Silk TV).

    As Giorgi Gugunishvili, director general of the company, has declared to journalists today, new service will be available for both existing and new users.

  15. “RAKEEN DEVELOPMENT” TO INVEST $16M IN “SHERATON METECHI PALACE TBILISI” UPGRADE

    Arabian company Rakeen Development, owner of Sheraton Metechi Palace Tbilisi, will invest $16 million in reconstruction of this Tbilisi hotel, Tamuna Guledani, head of marketing and realization department of Sheraton Metechi Palace Tbilisi and Sheraton Batumi, told Sarke.

    According to Guledani, reconstruction, which is planned to start in September, should be completed within 1.5 years.

  16. TBILISI ACCOUNTS FOR 80.4% OF ISSUED CREDITS

    According to National Bank of Georgia, Tbilisi continues accounting for the lion’s share of banking credits. As of April 1, 4.96 billion lari, or 80.4% of total credits, were issued in Tbilisi.

  17. Rezonansi: “UGULAVA STARTS CLEANING AND BEAUTIFICATION OF GUDAURI”

    About 2.5 million lari should be allotted from Tbilisi budget for development of Gudauri mountainous resort, which was handed over recently to Tbilisi for management.

    The decision on allotment caused severe criticism of opposition in Tbilisi Sakrebulo (City Council), who warned Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava to refuse improper spending of funds.

  18. BSA IS GOING TO CONTROL LEGAL USE OF SOFTWARE IN GEORGIA

    BSA (Business Software Alliance) is going to control legal use of software in Georgia. The intention was declared today in Tbilisi, during signing of memorandum on cooperation between BSA and Sakpatent (Georgian Patent, national center for intellectual property).

  19. DAVID OWEN (IMF): THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO SOCIAL POLICY RATHER THEN TO MONETARY POLICY TOUGHENING

    David Owen, deputy director of IMF department on Near East and Central Asia, considers that current stage does not require toughening of monetary policy, as prices, raised rapidly due to food crisis, are stabilized now without strict monetary policy.

    On the background of lack of developed social protection in Georgia, the government should pay more attention to social policy, rather than to monetary policy toughening, Owen said.

  20. Rezonansi: “WTO DOES NOT WANT TO ADMIT RUSSIA’S MEMBERSHIP WITHOUT GEORGIA’S CONSENT”

    First round of negotiations between Tbilisi and Moscow, concerning Russia’s admission to World Trade Organization (WTO), had held in March, while the second one is planned on April 29.

    Russia has been trying to join WTO since 1993, while Georgia, which has become a member in 2000, has a right of veto.
