    As the representative of the fraction Entrepreneurs Zurab Tkemaladze informed Sarke, he is confident in Arsenishvili’s ability to implement the President’s program for coming out of the crisis. According to Tkemaladze, Giorgi Arsenishvili is “an excellent candidature”.

    The Chairmen of the Committees on Sectoral Economics Zurab Tskitishvili, Economic Policy Levan Gachechiladze, Taxes and Revenues Zurab Nogaideli, Social Welfare and Health David Gamkrelidze, Agrarian David Kirvalidze, Procedures and Rules Roland Giligashvili, Foreign Affairs Nino Burjanadze and Human Rights Elene Tevdoradze are among those, who resigned. This happened as a result of the closed session of the chairmen of committees, held under the chairmanship of Zurab Zhvania today.

  3. PRESIDENT OF THE OSCE PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY VISITING GEORGIA

    Helle Dagn, who arrived in Tbilisi on April 23, met the Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania today. She suggested that “results of the parliamentary and presidential elections showed that, in terms of the institutional arrangement and political processes underway in the country, Georgia is coming closer to the European standards, so the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is ready to expand cooperation with Georgia in all directions”.

    The President and the Chairman of the parliament have matured and proceeded to the real activities – this is the estimation given to the last week’s affairs by all the newspapers actually. This is about the government session, during which, Eduard Shevardnadze threatened “two-headed ministers” (Meridiani estimates this as President’s unwillingness to put up with the ministers, who overlap portfolios with their shares in the commercial enterprises), as well as Zurab Zhvania’s program address to the session, declaring that “the Parliament has run out of all its limits of compromises and concessions while appointing ministers” (7 Dge).

  5. OSCE WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE ELABORATION OF THE GEORGIA’S ELECTION CODE

  7. PARLIAMENT SET ABOUT THE DISCUSSION OF THE QUESTION ON AJARA STATUS

    The Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania while addressing Parliament refused the probability that the decision over making amendments to the constitution was adopted as a result of the secret agreement between the central and Ajarian authorities. Moreover, he declared that the ruling Citizens’ Union and the Revival Union would remain to be the political opponents.

    The Foreign Minister of Austria Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the acting chairman of the OSCE Permanent Council, has welcomed the decision of the organization, adopted at the session in Vienna. According to the press release of the OSCE mission, the decision has been adopted because of the need to strengthen monitoring for the summer time, when the passages via the Caucasian ridge open.

  11. HUNGER-STRIKING PRISONERS HAVE BEEN PROMISED TO CONSIDER THEIR AMNESTY

    According to the Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania, who visited the republican prison hospital and met the prisoners on the elections’ eve, the extraordinary session of the Parliament will be summoned till April 18 and will consider this issue. As it has been already informed, the prisoners threatened to commit suicide on the election day.

  12. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN GEORGIA ACKNOWLEDGED TO BE CONDUCTED

    According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), by 9 p.m. the votes were shared the following way: 80.5% voted for Eduard Shevardnadze, 16.6% – for Jumber Patiashvili, 0.26% – Kartlos Garibashvili, 0.2% – Avtandil Joglidze, 0.1% – Tengiz Asanidze, 0.08% – Vazha Zhgenti (after 97% of voters cast their vote). The information is being further specified, the CEC is to present the final results for the elections in 20 days.

  13. AJARA CONSTITUTIONAL STATUS MIGHT BE CONSIDERED BY THE PARLIAMENT IN THE NEAR FUTURE

    This possibility was not excluded by the Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania during his meeting with Batumi journalists held after the meeting with the Chairman of the Supreme Council of Ajara Autonomy Aslan Abashidze. He stressed that during the meeting, the question concerning the autonomy’s status had been discussed, refusing assumptions that issues over presidential elections had been considered as well.

    Agordzineba bloc leader, the Chairman of the Supreme Council of Ajara Autonomy, one of the presidential candidates, declared that he was informed only right before the nomination of one more representative of the bloc, Jumber Patiashvili, as the presidential candidate. According to Abashidze, this came as a surprise, not unacceptable however, to him.

  16. WHO NEW DIRECTOR IN THE EUROPEAN REGION ARRIVED TO GEORGIA

    Mark Banzon has visited the UN representation and met with Zurab Zhvania at the Parliament. During the visit of the Public Health and Social Welfare Ministry Bezon declared that World Health Organization was going to conduct the work in Georgia on the following directions: assistance in controlling the contagion, population behavioral problems (smoking, alcohol), environmental problems and the public health system development.

  17. SPECIFIC DUTY ON IMPORTED OIL PRODUCTS TAKING EFFECT ON APRIL 20

    The decision to make amendments to the Tax and Customs Codes was adopted at the plenary session of the Georgian Parliament today. Instead of the 80 percent excise rate on the oil products import (distillates) the specific duty of 200 Lari per tone is introduced.

  18. PARLIAMENT HAD RATIFIED CREDIT AGREEMENT WITH KFW

    According to the agreement, the German bank will allocate 30 million DEM to the Land Management Department for the land register. The credit is allocated for 40 year, under 0.75% annual, with 30-year grace period.

  19. GEORGIAN PARLIAMENT READY FOR IMMEDIATE RATIFICATION OF THE MAIN EXPORT OIL PIPE LINE AGREEMENT

    Heidar Aliyev addressing the Georgian Parliament today, said the tariff issue, representing a matter of argument, had been finally solved. He stressed that the concession, made by Azerbaijan in this case, was done for the common interests, genuine friendship of the two people and their leaders.

  20. LAW ENFORCEMENT BODIES REFUTING STORY ABOUT DELIBERATE DAMAGE OF TIRE OF PATIASHVILI’S VEHICLE
