    The monitoring mission of the Council of Europe, led by Matyas Eorse, have visited Tbilisi this week to get acquainted with the course of preparation for the Georgian presidential and Parliamentary elections due in 2004.

    Members of the delegation have meet with the acting president of Georgia Nino Burjanadze, State Minister Zurab Zhvania, acting speaker Gigi Tsereteli and representative of the whole political spectrum.

  2. ARMENIA, AZERBAIJAN, GEORGIA, KAZAKHSTAN AND MOLDOVA JOINTLY WORKING ON AIR NAVIGATION PROBLEMS

    On December 10-12 Tbilisi hosted a working meeting for representatives of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgian Kazakhstan and Moldova who discussed the ways of improving service in the air navigation service. The countries established in June 2003 the regional agency of the Caucasus and Asia corridor development (RADA).

    Heikki Talvitie, European Union’s Special Representative for the Caucasus, who arrived in Georgia yesterday, met today with Zurab Chiaberashvili, the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC).

    After the meeting, Talvitie said he supported the CEC’s recent decision regarding voters’ registers.

  5. DUBAI AIR SHOW RAISES INTEREST IN TBILAVIAMSHENI PRODUCTS

    Top officials of the UAE as well as US representatives have become interested in Maverick jets, to be assembled by Tbilaviamsheni (the Tbilisi aviation plant), Zurab Seskuria, a foreign economic relations director, told Sarke.

    The Georgian delegation, including Seskuria, introduced information on the jet to the international air show in Dubai, held from December 7 to 11.

  6. NEW SUPERVISORY BOARD OF RAILWAY ELECTED

    LLC Georgian Railway’s supervisory board of 12 members was elected today. According to the press service of the Railway Department, in two days the board will name a new general director of the LLC.

  7. FINANCE MINISTER PROMISES AMBITIOUS BUDGET-2004

    The government plans to consider a new draft of next year’s budget on December 20. Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli told a news conference today the budget-2004 would be “ambitious” compared with the budget-2003.

  8. FINANCE MINISTER THREATENS TAX SERVICES WITH PERSONNEL CHANGES AND BANS SELLING STATE ENTERPRISES FOR DEBTS

    Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli expressed discontent with the majority of regional tax services at a news briefing today and declared his intention to sack heads of the services. He emphasized the budget had to be implemented during a month not at the end of it or the end of year, as it usually happens.

  9. SIX CANDIDATES TO RUN FOR PRESIDENCY

    Yesterday, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) finally registered five presidential candidates, although their number initially was 15.

    The following are going to run for presidency: Mikheil Saakashvili, the National Movement leader, Teimuraz Shashiashvili, the former representative of the president in the Imereti region, Kartlos Garibashvili, a famous lawyer, as well as Roin Liparteliani, Zurab Kelekhsashvili and Zaza Sikharulidze.

  10. CONFLICT OF INTERESTS IN POLITICS AND BUSINESS

    Results of a dialogue between Batumi and Tbilisi started with the visit of the acting president of Georgia Nino Burjanadze to Ajara have yet to be seen.

    According to Dilis Gazeti, neither this visit nor the ones to come (State Minister Zurab Zhvania plans to arrive in Batumi as well) will yield any results until uncompromising conflict of interests exits between the sides.

  11. LLC QUARTZITE PARTNERS TO MEET ON DECEMBER 17
    (Daily News: December 12, 2003)

    JSC Madneuli (ore mining and processing enterprise) and LLC Quartzite (a daughter enterprise of Madneuli extracting gold) have issued a joint statement in which they say a meeting of Quartzite partners on December 17 will consider interrelationships, as well as plans and prospects for investment attraction.

    The decision of the meeting may become a “basis for the implementation of an investment project worth of tens of millions of dollars”, reads the statement.

  12. PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE SAAKASHVILI PLEDGES HIS SUPPORT FOR BUSINESS

    Today Mikhail Saakashvili, a presidential candidate and the National Movement leader, and State Minister Zurab Zhvania met with representatives of business circles. Saakashvili pledged during the meeting, that the state and business would conclude an agreement directed at the improvement of investment environment.

  13. WORLD BANK VICE-PRESIDENT FOR ECA COMPLETED VISIT TO GEORGIA

    The World Bank Vice-President for Europe and Central Asia Region (ECA) Shigeo Katsu has visited Georgia on December 11-12. The purpose of his visit was to meet and discuss with the country’s new leadership how the Bank can assist Georgia.

  14. NEWLY APPOINTED DEPUTY CHIEF OF CIVIL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION RESIGNS

    Kakha Tskitishvili, a deputy chairman of the civil aviation administration, resigned yesterday evening, following the sharp statements by Mikhail Saakashvili, a presidential candidate and the National Movement leader.

    Tskitishvili, who worked as a private lawyer before appointment, 2 days ago was appointed by administration head Zurab Chankotadze as his deputy, Shorena Darchia, head of the air administration press-service, told Sarke.

  15. CHINESE IMPORTS TO GEORGIA DOUBLES, GEORGIAN EXPORTS DECREASES

    According to the Economics, Industry and Trade Ministry, the trade turnover between Georgia and China for the past nine months has made up $19.98 million compared to about $5.65 million in the similar period last year.

    The official import of Chinese products this year has considerably increased to $18.51 million compared to $4.94 million for the similar period last year, Andro Dvali, a leading expert of the Ministry, told Sarke.

  16. NATIONAL MOVEMENT LEADER PROMISES TO RESTORE TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY

    National Movement held a session today. Mikheil Saakashvili, the party leader and the presidential candidate, in his address to the session, pledged he would direct his efforts to the restoration of country’s territorial integrity, and get back Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.

  17. TBILISI AND BATUMI NEGOTIATIONS LAUNCHED

    The acting president of Georgia Nino Burjanadze visited today Batumi and met Ajara leader Aslan Abashidze behind closed doors.

    Burjanadze told journalists later: “The dialogue has started and the main thing now is to go ahead with it”.

  18. STATE MINISTER CONSIDERS ENERGY ISSUES WITH FUEL AND ENERGY MINISTER AND TELASI MANAGEMENT

    State Minister Zurab Zhvania and Fuel and Energy Minister Mamuka Nikolaishvili visited jointly today the head office of TELASi, Tbilisi energy distributor, to consider with director general Dangiras Mikalajunas problems with energy supply of the capital.

    Zhvania says there is “chaotic situation” in the energy system and a “certain decision will have to be made” in order to provide 24-hour electricity delivery for Tbilisi and minimum for regions.

  19. REFORMS PLANNED IN RAILWAY DEPARTMENT

    The country’s new authorities plan to carry out reforms in the Railway Department together with foreign experts.

    An 11-member New Supervisory Board of LLC Georgian Railway is going to be set up in two days.

  20. BUDGET-2004 WITHDRAWN FROM PARLIAMENT

    Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli announced today the draft budget-2004 had been withdrawn from the Parliament. First, the document will be reviewed and then reintroduced to the Parliament in February 2004.
