    Eduard Shevardnadze commented in a radio interview today on his last week’s meeting with the core of Citizens’ Union. President is still a member of the former ruling party the reformative team of which under the ex-speaker Zurab recently declared that the party was in opposition.

  2. QUESTION OF TRANSFERRING POTI TERMINALS TO INVESTOR FOR MANAGEMENT STILL NOT SOLVED

    The terminals were planned to be transferred to an investor for management as early as 2000, however, due to a prolonged suit between the Poti port and Sameba, the wine firm (claiming the lot on the territory of the 7th terminal), the tender has yet to be announced.

    Court at all levels ruled in favor of the port, however, the lawsuit continues as the Supreme Court sent the case back to the District Court, Gia Todua, head of the Department of the State Property Management Ministry, told Sarke.

  3. EX-SPEAKERS DOES NOT INTEND TO LEAVE CITIZENS’ UNION

    Today the State Office hosted a meeting between representatives of Citizens’ Union (CU) and Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze. The ex-speaker Zurab Zhvania participated in the meeting as well.

  4. COMMERCIAL BANKS ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA PREPARES PLANS FOR NEXT TWO YEARS

    Parliament today decided to hold a plenary meeting on March 29 in order to prepare a document on an external threat posing to Georgia.

    Ex-speaker Zurab Zhvania offered to appeal to those international organizations the duty of which is to insure security.

  6. GOVERNMENT CONSIDERS RESTRUCTURING OF OVERDUE TAX LIABILITIES

    Reporting on overdue debts to the budget at a govern session today Levan Dzenaldze, the Tax Revenues Minister, offered to restructure one part and to write off another (bad debts).

    34,500 enterprises have overdue debts from the line of Tax Department (by January 1, 2002 data).

  7. LOCAL ELECTIONS TO BE HELD ON JUNE 2
    (Daily News: March 27, 2002)

    Georgian President said at a government session today he would signed a decree on holding local administration and self-government elections on June 2 after considering the question with leaders of Parliamentary factions yesterday.

    Zurab Tkemaladze, an MP, told Sarke, Shevardnadze supports holding election on proportional principle, but insists that Gamgebeli (head of the regional administration) be appointed by President.

  8. JUSTICE MINISTRY PRESENTS ITS ALTERNATIVE OF THE BILL ON ILLEGAL PROPERTY

    Parliament has not made a final decision on the bill on illegal property after considering it today. It is expected to put to vote the two versions of the bill, prepared by the Justice Ministry and the MP Mikheil Saakashvili respectively, on March 29.

  9. NGO VERSUS NGO OR IN THE RACE FOR “SUCCESSION”

    It’s a pity everything is so politicized, Akhali Taoba writes, noting the involvement of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the confrontation within the Citizens’ Union (CU) was not difficult to predict. Every more or less solid NGO is related to politics, irrespective of what a grant is allocated for – protection of prisoners’ rights, cultivation of beetles or accomplishment of public toilets, the newspaper writes.

  12. TREASURY REFORM TO START IN MAY

    The process had to start in January but was postponed due to technical reasons, said Zurab Nogaideli, the Finance Minister. The reform, which envisages closing transit accounts and opening a single budget account in the National Bank, will be conducted in four stages.

    Deputy Levan Pirveli, one of the promoters of Tbilcreditbank apprises decision on liquidation of the Bank as a political revenge. The Finance Minister implemented his intention, the Deputy noted, reminding Zurab Nogaideli’s promise to “destroy the Bank”.

  16. GEORGIA’S DEBT TO THE USA PARTIALLY RESTRUCTURED
    (Daily News: March 6, 2002)

    An agreement on consolidation and restructuring of Georgia’s debt to the USA was signed by the Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli and the USA acting ambassador to Georgia Philip Remler at the Finance Ministry today.

    $765,710 of the $20 million credit (allocated by the USA to Georgia under the 1997 agreement) is subject to restructuring.

  17. TAX REVENUES MINISTRY NOT IN IMMINENT DANGER OF LIQUIDATION

    Levan Dzneladze, the Tax Revenues Minister, gives assurance his Ministry will not merge with the Finance Ministry in the near future. He pointed out that the Ministry of Tax Revenues carried responsibility for the budget implementation.

  18. FEBRUARY PLAN OF TAX REVENUES IMPLEMENTED

    According to the Tax Revenues Ministry preliminary data, February forecast parameters of 76.2 million Lari, are implemented by 100.9%, which exceeds last year’s figure by 21%.

    Tax Revenues Minister Levan Dzneladze said at today’s briefing at the Treasury despite usual difficult conditions in February the plan proved possible to be implemented.

  19. MPS INDIGNANT AT RUSSIAN MASS MEDIA CLAIMS

    The Parliament has prepared an announcement today which says that Georgia, as a sovereign country, is ready to cooperate with various states, including the US, in the struggle against terrorism. The document expressed indignation at the agio some of Russia’s politicians raised due to the arrival of American military instructors in Georgia.

  20. MPS COMMENT ON THE DEATH OF NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL SECRETARY

    MPs commented today on the death of Nugzar Sajaia, the secretary of the National Security Council. They honored his memory by a minute of silence.
