    As Alvaro Hil-Roblez declared during his meeting with the Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania on June 6, his visit mainly aimed at studying the situation with refugees in Georgia. He has already visited Pankisi Canyon for that purpose, where some 6,500 refugees from Chechnya have found shelter.

    This is the announcement made by Tetri Legioni (White Legion) commander Zurab Samushia, while informing about this decision adopted by the Main Council of the Interim Committee on Abkhazia’s Liberation. Samushia thinks that the leadership of the country is to give evaluation to the activities of Ardzinba’s regime in Abkhazia at last.

    The Parliament confirmed Sesili Gogiberidze as the Minister of Culture, Mikheil Machavariani – Tax Revenues Minister, Zurab Nogaideli – Finance Minister (138 deputies voted pro, 8-against), Vano Chkhartishvili – Minister of Economics, Industry and Trade.

    The candidatures on the post of Interior Minister (Kakha Targamadze), State Security Minister (Vakhtang Kutateladze), Defense Minister (David Tevzadze) and Foreign Minister (Irakli Menagarishvili) are yet to be confirmed at this moment.

    President’s representative in Kakheti region Giorgi Arsenishvili has been appointed on the post of the State Minister, out of the nominees – Tbilisi Mayor Vano Zodelava, President’s representative in Imereti region Temur Shashiashvili, GIOC president Giorgi Chanturia. As 7 Dge puts it, this appointment is the President’s one more surprise, inquiring whether it is reasonable to appoint such “not-political” figure, on this post amidst the accretion of power of the stateminister.

  15. DISCUSSION ON THE 1999 BUDGET REPORT WILL HAVE A PRINCIPLED CHARACTER, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PARLIAMENT SAID

    The Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania declared that the Parliament would necessarily consider the report on the 1999 budget implementation. He stressed that this consideration would bear a principled character and refused the information that allegedly there was some contradiction in the parliamentary minority upon this issue.

    The Parliamentary fraction of the party Traditionalists’ Union declared about its intention to leave Batumi alliance in case Agordzineba participates in the formation of a new government of Georgia.

    It should be noted that the traditionalists’ leader Akaki Asatiani has collected more than 100 signatures of deputies supporting the demand to create the institute of Cabinet in the country (118 signatures are needed for submitting the question to the parliament).

    As it has become known to Sarke, 2 out of 8 chairmen resigned yesterday did not attend today’s meeting with the Chairman of the Parliament. Yesterday, the President estimated the action of the chairmen, signing together with 120 deputies the declaration on the necessity to create the commission for the investigation of the government’s accountability in the economic crisis, as extremely untimely and indelicate.

  18. DELEGATION OF CANADIAN PARLIAMENT WILL ARRIVE IN TBILISI

    The delegation is headed by the Chairman of the Foreign Relations and International Trade Committee Ben Graham. As Sarke was informed at the Public Information Department of the Foreign Ministry of Georgia, it is planned to hold meetings with the President Eduard Shevardnadze, Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania, acting State Minister Vazha Lortkipanidze and Foreign Minister Irakli Menagarishvili during the visit, lasting from May 11 through 14.

  19. SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE OF UN SECRETARY GENERAL ON REFUGEES ARRIVED IN GEORGIA

    Francis Deng is going to participate in the regional workshop on refugees and displaced people to be conducted in Tbilisi. The representatives of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia will take part in the conference conducted with the participation of the UN High Commissariat of Refugees (UNHCR) by the OSCE support.

  20. NEW TAX CORRUPTION INDEX ELABORATED IN GEORGIA

    The Economics Minister Vladimir Papava has elaborated indexes, enabling to estimate the corruption level in the tax system, on the ground of common index theories. According to the proposal of the Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania they are entitled as Papava’s indexes.
