   The Foreign Minister of Georgia Irakli Menagarishvili and Lithuania Algirdas Saudargas signed the protocol on deepening the cooperation between Foreign Ministries of the two countries. Menagarishvili declared during the briefing, held after signing the protocol, that the contractual-legal base, calling for the regulation of cooperation in political and economic spheres and security sphere, is begin created.

2. JOHN WOOLF VISITING GEORGIA ON JULY 12, STEPHEN SESTANOVICH – JULY 14

   Foreign Ministry of Georgia said the Special Adviser of the US President and the Secretary of State on Caspian power resources John Woolf is going to meet the President Eduard Shevardnadze, State Minister Giorgi Arsenishvili, Foreign Minister Irakli Menagarishvili as well as representatives of business circles of Georgia. During the meeting, the sides will consider the questions concerning the development of the transportation of Caspian power resources.

   Today at the enlarged session of the Citizens’ Union Satatbiro (supreme body) Zurab Nogaideli declared that “the government is to appear as a single team” at its tomorrow’s session. We’ll remind to you that the government session tomorrow will consider Nogaideli’s proposal on the budget cut by 300 million Lari, which prompted harsh criticism of a number of Ministers.

7. SUMMER DISCUSSION OF FALL-WINTER ENERGETICS PROBLEMS

   The Minister of Fuel and Energy David Mirtskhulava at the government session today provided detailed information on the condition of the energetics sector and on preparation works for the fall-winter season of 2000-2001. On the whole, the situation is encouraging though there are some financial difficulties arising, the Minister said.

9. BUDGET-2000 SPENDINGS GOING TO BE REDUCED BY 300M LARI

11. FOREIGN MINISTRY NOT SHARING PARLIAMENT DELEGATION’S POSITION ON RUSSIA IN STRASBOURG

    As it is known, Georgia has repeatedly stated its adverse attitude towards the anti Russian sanctions in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). However, at the last Strasbourg session the Georgian delegation, headed by the Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania unanimously backed the PACE decision on starting the procedure for Russia’s exclusion from the Council of Europe because of its activities in Chechnya.

12. LATVIAN FOREIGN MINISTER VISITING GEORGIA ON JULY 4-7

    Indulis Berzinsh will meet the President Eduard Shevardnadze, Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania, State Minister Giorgi Arsenishvili and Foreign Minister Irakli Menagarishvili in the framework of the visit. According to the Foreign Ministry of Georgia, the sides will consider the questions on the regional cooperation and the bilateral cooperation in the fields of politics, economics and culture.

13. DISCUSSION OF THE ABKHAZ PROBLEM BY THE PARLIAMENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED

14. ZURAB ZHVANIA LEFT FOR STRASBOURG

    The Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania will participate in the consideration of the question on admitting Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe, by the official invitation of the PACE Secretary General Lord Russell Johnston. In his letter, Russell Johnston noted the work, conducted by Zhvania in the trilateral meeting of the South Caucasian states held in the framework of the CE in 1999.

15. FINANCE MINISTER OF GEORGIA NOT PESSIMISTIC ABOUT GEORGIA’S FUTURE RELATIONS WITH IMF

    While evaluating results of the IMF mission which has recently finished its visit in Georgia, the Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli declared in the Georgian TV that it was even possible to consider successful the work of the economic team with Fund experts.

16. GEORGIA WILL GET THE GRANT OF EUROPEAN COMMISSION OF 9M EUR

    This is envisaged by the memorandum on the mutual understanding, signed on June 20 by the representatives of the European commission, Finance Ministry and the NB of Georgia. The grant will enable to cover the part of Georgia’s debt towards EU, amounting to 100 million EUR.
